Ben Webster - Chelsea Bridge (1964)

This is Ben Webster on the tenor saxophone backed up by Stan Tracey on piano; Ricky Laird on bass, and Jackie Doogan on drums performing Billy Strayhorn’s “Chelsea Bridge.

Benjamin Francis Webster (1909 – 1973) was born in Kansas City. He became famous during his years with the Duke Ellington Orchestra between 1935 and 1943. His reputation expanded over the next two decades and he became considered one of the three most important “swing tenors” during his lifetime along with Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young. He moved permanently to Copenhagen in 1964 to join other American jazz musicians.

You can watch him perform “Flying Home” here, “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” here, and “How Long Has This Been Going On” here.
