This week marks the second anniversary of the murder of Theo van Gogh. In 2004, van Gogh created a short film, Submission, addressing the issue of violence against women in Islamic societies. The ten-minute film tells the stories of four abused Muslim women. The script was by Ayaan Hirsi Ali.
Following the release of the film in 2004, both van Gogh and Hirsi Ali received death threats. On November 2nd, 2004, van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death on a street in Amsterdam by a young Muslim man. A five page note was pinned to his body with knives implanted in the torso, threatening Western governments, Jews and Hirsi Ali.
The film may be seen here.
